ISO 20121 (Event Sustainability Management System) is designed for all industry participants that want to implement a sustainable management system for their events. The system promotes ethical, responsible and economically beneficial behaviour (economic aspect), while ensuring the protection of everyone’s rights (social aspect) and of the environment (environmental aspect). ISO 20121 bears many similarities and common requirements with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, and follows the paragraph structure of their recent revisions. It also integrates many of the ethical conduct guidelines outlined in ISO 26000. The scheme requires the organisation to set out its goals for ongoing improvement in environmental, economic, and social sustainability, and to put into action a management system to realise these objectives.
In 2020, Mugello Circuit became the first racetrack in the world to attain ISO 20121 Certification.
